I will be at Higgins Lake starting Thursday June 30 staying through the 4th of July. Anyone else going to be in the area? I will have my son James with me and look forward to doing some diving.

Can anyone tell me where the nearest fill station is? You would think with the number of divers who use Higgins Lake that someone would have an air fill station. I have been thinking about acquiring a couple of big bottles to fill from. I would probably just mount these in my trailer and bleed them down as far as I could each trip. I have two 130's and two hp100's to fill.

If you are interested in diving Higgins drop me a pm and I will give you my cell number.

The guy at my LDS says the compressor from the old air shack is still there. He says you should contact the ice cream shop...

We're going to Chicago this weekend so we won't be able to join you.

Mitten Diver:

My husband and I live in Houghton Lake, are new divers and have not yet been diving in Higgins Lake. I have been trying to figure out who has possession of the compressor in Higgins Lake and have had no luck to date. We are having guests this weekend. I would love to dive, but I guess that hostess thing is going to take precedence. Ugh.

In any case, I will call over to the ice cream store and see if they know anything about the compressor. I have already made meandering calls through various Higgins Lake businesses in an effort to locate air! Because if the local air cannot be found, the nearest dive shop is in Cadillac or Mt. Pleasant or Traverse City. Not exactly next door. If I find out where it is, I will let you know. It would be great if you find out if you could let me know. We live on the North Shore of Houghton Lake, about 10 minutes from Higgins Lake. I have this fantasy about buying the compressor and setting up intermittent shop, so to speak:) Kathalina

Just took a drive up to the west shore of Higgins Lake where the Scuba Shack sign continues to taunt me... Wish someone would take the sign down! Anyway, spoke with the owner of the ice cream/bait and tackle store and she said she did not know who had the compressor. Stated she and her husband had considered it because there is such a demand, but the liability insurance was prohibitive. The mystery continues. She suggested that I contacted our local paper, the Houghto Lake Resorter, because they are usually in the know about these things. I will try to make contact with them tomorrow. Wish me luck. The mystery continues...

Kathalina,
I have two business cards from the defunct Air Shack and as you; feel taunted every time that we drive by there. My in-laws have a cottage in the VFW area of Higgins Lake this is just west of the North State Park. I will call all of the numbers, one of the guys is a local Instrucor and helped out around the shop I believe. Two years ago when we were up there you were able to call these guys and meet them down there for fill. The owners also owned the coffee shop as well and typically the wife would walk over to give you a fill.

I will call and see if I can locate the compressor for you, I usually exit in Houghton so stopping by for air fills would be pretty easy. I will be there through the fourth with my sons and wife so if you do have an interest we could dive the AMVETS area. Makes for a nice easy dive and generally a lot to see for Higgins Lake. Send me a PM and I will give you my cell number.

reference to air at Higgins Lake
I am the owner of the now closed Air Shack. My wife owns the now closed Coffee House. Just thought I would provide some info as to what the status is at Higgins for air. Unfortuneately there is no air. I still have my air system but have let the liability insurance lapse as well as the fact I am no longer a business able to sell air. In Aug/Sept of 2003 my wife and myself were forced to move downstate due to job transfers. The dive shop in Cadillac is about 45 miles, Traverse City is about 60 miles. It takes about an hour to get to either place. Wish I had a more positive post for the Higgins Lake divers

Hi Mitten,

I don't know if you will see this before you go or not.

I will be heading up to Higgins Saturday and I hope to chase you down for a dive or two. I will be coming with another diver from Grand Blanc and expect to roll into Higgins about 1pm. He had a conflict and we cannot get started until about 10:30am.

Hope to see you up there,

Mark: Thanks so much for your post. I have felt the old Scuba Shack has been like a great ghost story with a trail of bread crumbs leading me nowhere! I would love to have more information about the compressor. I was more than a wee bit serious about thinking about going into business. My husband will probably read this post and think I have lost my mind. He might be correct, but the fact remains that I am seriously considering the purchase of a compressor and perhaps selling air. I am less sure about the selling part because of all the liability issues. In any case, we live so close (North Shore of Houghton Lake). And the fact that we have to drive to Cadillac or Traverse City to get air when we live 10 minutes away from Higgins is just nuts. Of course it takes me 30 minutes to get to the grocery store, so go figure. Thanks again for your post. Kathalina

Hi Kathalina,
Sorry for slow response time. I have been at Higgins since the evening of July 1 and have no internet at the cottage. I will be getting hooked up at the cottage some time next week. If you would like to talk about air and compressors feel free to pm me and I will give you my cell phone # and be more than happy to talk with you or meet you at the old shop and give you a hands on lesson with the compressor.
