Hi,

Just south of Fraser Island is the small coastal town of Rainbow Beach and from here you can go diving out to Wolf Rock (Google this and get in touch with Kev Phillips). The rock(s) are a reasonably advanced dive but it is open ocean and you could see anything. I saw a Manta and the biggest Pipefish I have ever seen. The attraction is a group of massive Grey Nurse Sharks (all 2-3m big) who are resident there. They look scary but are very meek and endangered in Oz. To be 2m from these awesome beasts was amazing - listen out for there sonic boom (tail) which precedes their arrival. Not the greatest visibility but one of my all time favourite dives without a doubt.

A liveaboard from Townsville or Cairns is probably the best option.
In any case, make sure you do the SS Yongala - you won't be disappointed. Two day operators from Townsville (operators Adrenalin Dive and Tropical Diving) operate larger boats than the operator from Ayr and all do double dives. Townsville trip time is approx 3 hrs each way!
Townsville liveaboards (operators Diving Dreams and Pro Dive Townsvile) include the Yongala in their itinerary (weather permitting).

Hey this is coming from a novice who is just now getting certified but we have been diving at Great Keppel island and they have been real enjoyable. I much prefer the dives I have had here to the ones I had in cairns a few months ago. However that was just a small day trip so the liveaboard might be a hundred times beter, I cant really say......Just thought I would let you know incase you get stranded near Great Keppel on your trip up the coast.

Cheers
Vinny
