"All Club Med guests departed Columbus Isle and Turkoise safely this weekend. The staff at both resorts are safe and unharmed. Both Turkoise and Columbus Isle sustained no damage from the storm and have electricity and communications operational. Club Med will welcome guests at Columbus Isle beginning Tuesday, September 9. Guests at Turkoise will be welcomed Wednesday, September 10. All guests should confirm flights directly with their carrier."

Just took this off of the Club Med website.

Just got back from Jamaica. My trip was delayed 2 days while I waited out Gustav, then Hannah's outer rings came in. I was able to dive 3 dives, was hoping for 20. Once the seas calmed down we could take the boat out however visability is 6 to 10 feet. Having dived there before after Hurricaine Dean it takes a good week or more to get your viz back. Ike outer bands have just passed and I doubt they could take the boats out. It will be awhile...

How fast visibility settles down after a hurricane is partly dependent upon the amount of runoff that could provide nutrients for algae growth.

If the hurricane has relatively little rain, vis will settle down faster. The same is true where the island is relatively flat or has few natural rivers or streams. All else being equal, a more mountainous island such as Jamaica will take longer for the vis to recover than a smaller flatter island such as the TCI or Cayman.

The way I look at things if no other storms hit or are schedued to hit I'll be there in the 26th. On the other hand I do have trip insurance.

hotels here are fine so are closed for september which they do anyway - so not all hotels are open here but we did not take too much damage and we are diving again- i would have thought that the vis will be fine by the time you are due here...:)

I"ve read that my resort in Provo is up and running, and they're fixing the landscaping issues. I'm still on the fence about going because I'm concerned about the scuba diving conditions and how much of the city will be open (restaurants). Since September is already considered the "silly season," I'm just worried that everything is going to be shut down.

If you've been to the area since hurricane Ike and have a report, please let me know. I have to cancel my trip this week in order to incur the smallest fee...which isn't small but it's not three nights stay! Thanks again for your input.
