One correction. The state fish of California is the Golden Trout. The Garibaldi was named the state marine fish a few years ago, probably because everyone called it the state fish.
Max, you are technically correct, which is of course the best kind of correct. Sent me down a rabbit hole of states which have more than one state fish. It's more common than you would think! Georgia actually has three state fish - one for fresh water, one for salt water, and one for cold water. Go figure!

@ROUS I highly recommend you give Catalina Divers Supply a call and set something up with them. I see you have a YouTube channel - you could make a video out of it!

@Eric Sedletzky where else have you been diving in Socal? Have you been able to do any boat based diving?

We just did a 2 tank dive with Catalina Scuba, and I would also check them out. Very nice equipment, including Dive Rite BP/W and new Xcel wetsuits. Our guide, Chris, was great in explaining the unique features of Catalina.

Little bit if a zombie thread but hopefully the OP will see this.
Yes, I’ve dived Southern California from several boats and from shore. Shore diving mostly up in the Malibu Area. Boat diving on many of the Channel Islands from charter boats, and also from private boats. The diving is varied and all really great. I used to be a satellite member of the Sea Divers, a Socal based dive club comprised of experienced veteran divers. They would go to some of the more advanced spots in the Channel Islands.
Still one of my favorites is the Spectre dive boat out of Ventura. It’s a day boat and they run a lot if OW classes from it, but not always, sometimes it’s just divers out wanting to hunt of just dive. It’s just a big boat and it’s just fun with a lot of fun people.
It doesn’t take a lot to make me happy and I enjoy being around people. I also don’t need to constantly escalate my diving up to the next level of extremes. I’m perfectly happy cruising through a kelp forest in 40’ of water just taking in the scenery.
