"Diving Bubbles" on reg hose -what the heck??!

Ok, so I noticed that the reg hose on the old/vintage stuff I am getting has "diving bubbles" attached to it.

It is basically a black plastic "holder" with 3 colored balls in it that look like ping pong balls. It has 'diving bubbles" written on it.

Maybe a naive question - but...what is it and what would it be used for?!

These balls were "engineered" to float up at 60 FPM, so that they could be used by a diver to help control his or her ascent rate.

They were developed well after the era generally considered to be vintage. They are from the mid-80s. There were two different types (and they were colored differently), one for fresh water and one for salt water.

I don't remember the different colors having any significance, they were just different colored and the bouyancy difference for a small ball in salt versus fresh water would be minimal.

That said, they were pointless even then as small exhaled bubbles rise at a suitable rate and you don't have to worry about them drifting away.
