I was trying to check out some new dive sites on June 30th. I originally went to Hazard Ave in Narragansett. I had dove Hazard Ave when I was in college back in the 1980s. I remembered it as a excellent site. When I arrived on Monday morning the it was just hitting high tide. An important aspect of the site that I had forgotten was that the entry was down a slope of rock that was exposed to the ocean swell.
I quickly decided that the entry and exit was a little more frisky than I was interested in for a solo dive.
Using my I-pad I pulled up maps and charts for the area and scanned along the coast towards the mouth of the bay. We checked a couple of spots along the shore and found Bass Rock Road. At the end of the road there is a little rocky cove that led out into shallow and opened out into the bay. Diving from the cove I proceeded into a sand and rock bottom about 25 fsw. Exploring along the rocks I went swam out perpendicular to the shore for about five minutes without finding much of interest and getting as deep as 38 fsw before heading back toward shore.
Overall, it was a good dive. You can see from the video I made that even at 25 or 30 fsw, the swell was pushing me around quite a bit. Nothing terrible, but you can see its effect on my ability to keep the camera steady. Let me know what you think of the video.
