I live in Palo Alto and monterey is great but it's kind of far (1.5hrs). Was wondering if there are any places closer to go beach diving around here? Why not Half moon bay? Any other suggestions or is monterey it?

Chuck,

This is good info. I was planning on checking out Half Moon Bay this weekend. How about the stretch to Santa Cruz? I saw many kelps floating around in the Summer.... Anything good around that area?

Pretty much the same problem. The softer rock on land
erodes a lot and makes for bad vis. When you get to
Monterey, the rock gets harder (which is why the
Monterey Peninsula sticks out) and doesn't mess up the
vis as much.

The fact that you don't see a lot of divers should be a
hint, given that the local dive community has had 50
years to find the good spots. There are a couple of
places that are sorta diveable, but I've never bothered.
A few of the hunters say there are big fish, IF you can
see them.

Chuck,

Thanks much for the info. You are right, there is hardly any diver there. Once in a blue moon we saw a few divers in Santa Cruz, but always wonder could there be any possible secret spot undiscover.

BTW, thanks for sharing your weather forecast info on this board. I recently start using the NOAA link you recomended and it really helps. Cheers.
