I have been searching for information on the affects of working out after diving, i dive six out of seven days, on average i dive three times a day in depths ranging between 15-30m maxing my tables nearly everyday. information on this subject seems difficult to come by or perhaps im not looking hard enough , any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated. :huh:
 
Hey I have been hearing a lot about htis lately. My wife is a personal trainer and i am a SCUBA instructor. She has been telling me not to work out until I have desaturated from diving. But it sounds like you may never desaturate with the schedule you quoted. Gas tension in the body may be too great and N2 would be released from solution. This would all depend on Hydration and body chemistry, as well as the amount of gas absorbed. you should probobly be diving nitrox as well to minimize nitrogen uptake.
I have struggled with this question for years. I have done long runs before diving and a few hours after and never had a problem. This is not something i would recommend to others though......

Dr. Deco has worked with this extensively at NASA - and it sounds like you're skirting danger pretty close. :11: Do you dive with a computer?
 
You must insure you stay Hydrated (Drink pleaty of H2O)! No one person is the same when it comes to body types and chemisty, all that bottom time adds up and you should allow sometime to off gas (I am in the Military an was teaching diving on Okinawa and conducting about 40 dives a month with long runs and weight lifting in the Gym. Pace Yourself and get pleaty of rest and drink H20!
 
Thanks, scvdiver! Yes, I've compiled research from over 40 studies on diving and exercise, and I dedicate a chapter in "Fitness for Divers" to the issue of dive day exercise. Bottom line, it seems to be much safer to exercise before diving than after. Strenuous lifting after diving is much riskier than moderate cardio. Cardio before diving might even be advantageous, but more research needs to be done here before any recommendations are made about this.

DAN's recommendation to wait 6 hours after diving seems to be safe, as it has been difficult for me to find any cases of DCS in someone who felt fine after a dive and waited that long before exercise. More significantly, it has also been difficult for me to find any cases of DCS in someone who exercised at any point *before* a dive that wasn't attributed to dehydration rather than bubble nucleation.

i never dive and work out on the same day. usually i will wait at least 24 hours aftr my last dive
 
post-dive is unavoidable at some shore sites...lugging steel doubles and stage bottles up several flights of steep stairs is the only way out at one location we frequent. Even taking a slow, deliberate pace can leave you with a fairly accelerated heart rate.

On a related topic, I've noticed that moderate exercise (1 mi swim or 25 mi bike ride) a few hours prior to longer dives (90-min) seems to reduce post-dive fatigue.

Cameron Martz's book is terrific and written in a way which allows divers to utilize the information asap. It's just a click away + I've already stopped some bad habits that I wasn't aware of. Mr. X
