For an interesting book on the history of man's quest to spend time underwater, I would highly recommend the book "Neutral Buoyancy: Adventures In A Liquid World" by Tim Ecott.

It's a very good book, starting with the earliest attempts by greek sponge fisherman to english natural philosophers to cousteau to modern navy aquanauts...it also has a lot of personal story telling in it. I've read it three or four times now, and it always seems an enjoyable book. Kind of like the author is sitting down with you and just relating some interesting stories that he's heard.

It's not a definitive history of scuba by any means, but it's definitely a great read.

I just glanced over the SCUBA history section of the link. I just about sunk in my chair. It's not that it was a surprise or anything as I know a lot about the recient history of diving. What flippin shocked me was seeing, in print, that I have been on this planet only 49 months shy of the entire history of OPEN CIRCUT SCUBA as we know it today.

The other shocker is that only 217 months of that period I was not been a diver.

I liked A Silent World by Jacques Cousteau. All about the earliest days of scuba (remember, Gary?).

Well think about this one: It would be another 42 YEARS from Cousteau-Gagnan to my birth and I've been diving for almost a decade.

I am pretty sure that Gary was being tounge-in-cheek and meant no ill will in his comments. It's kind of hard to convey friendly verbal jabs in text though.
