I spent a week at this resort in early November last year - We were the only guests and really had a fantastic time. Gilles and his wife are great hosts, the food is excellent, the beach beautiful and the bungalows comfortable. Diving wise the house reef is outstanding and actually consists of three dive sites (wall, slope and sandy). The sites around Alor are 30' minutes max by speed boat, in general less.

I realise this thread is a bit old, but....I would love to hear more about the diving from this resort as I am thinking of going in April. I have read elsewhere that the diving is mainly macro on the house reef because of the distance to the other Alor dive sites - in your opinion is it a good base for Alor diving generally (i.e. other than macro)? Thanks :)

Hello gnugnu, I have been to both Ambon/Moluccas and Alor. Both are top notch, but I would recommend Alor over Ambon ever so slightly, due mostly to the fact that there's less people in Alor than in Ambon and that Alor has less commercial fishing. Though, Ambon definitely has a better local wreck.

As for Gilles's ecco resort, they were very civil in correspondence and I'm sure they can put you on most of the good sites in Alor at the proper time. But if you want 3 different dives a day, you will have to settle for the house reef for the 3rd dive, due to the proximity issue. After doing my homework, it came down to whether you wanted a more ecco friendly kind of solitude and a bit more luxury at Gilles's place
or, you wanted somebody who is a fanatical diver and will make sure you get his best dive knowledge regardless of conditions and cares most about putting you on exceptional dive sights first and foremost, and whether you come back. Thomas is the goods, can't recommend him enough for giving the his best and at the best value... -Andy

Hello, has anyone been to Alor in the past few months and can recommend a resort there with AC if it is hot at night preferably? Also what is the viz like at the end of December?
