Hi. We are doing a family vacation for a week and splitting the time between Iberostar Paraiso Lindo near Playa del Carmen and Akumal. Any recommendations for dive ops in Akumal--how is the diving there? Also-has anyone dive with the dive ops at the Paraiso Lindo and is it worth doing it or should I wait until Akumal? Thanks!

If you want to see what a reef on life support looks like, dive Akumal. The locals have done a terrible job with waste water management. The middle and outer reefs are essentially dead. On the bright side, there are a lot of cenotes for cavern diving that are very nice.

I would stay away from the Akumal Dive Shop. A Five Star PADI op doesn't have a boat that would pass a Mexican Coast Guard inspection. BTW, that is not the problem I have with them. Try 1 DM, 12 divers which includes 2 Discover Scuba divers on one of their scheduled dives. That is the shop's idea of safe diving.

I used Akumal Dive Center last November and had a great time. Good DM's, safe and courteous. Did 2 dives in Choc Mool Cenote and several dives on the reef.

I went to Akumal Dive Shop first and walked, no ran away from that place.

That's very unfortunate to learn of the lousy condition of Akumal's reefs. The last time we were in Mexico we were in Xcalak, and it's so remote down there (at least at the time it was), that the reef was in amazing shape. Thank you for the warning with Akumal Dive Shop--with 2 warnings, i will definitely stay away!

Akumal Dive Center is a much better choice. Akumal Dive Shop is an tragedy waiting to happen.

Regarding the boats, you cannot get a permit to build a dock for a real dive boat on a beach. Mexican regulations just will not allow it. The dive shops are pretty much forced to use pangas that do not have the room for gear required to pass inspection. The CG recognizes that and permits them to operate. It would be nice if ADS's boats had first aid kits though.

I've been diving in Akumal for years and hate to say it, but driftwood is right. The middle and outer reef are in a sadder state each trip. If I was visiting and diving there now for the first time it would probably be a one-time thing. Really is a heartbreaking example of how quickly things can decline if not properly cared for.

You will see turtles, rays and the occasional eel and octopus. Most sites don't have the big schools of fish anymore or much (if any) healthy coral, fans or sponges. If you go slow and poke around there is still stuff to see but don't expect to jump in and be wowed. Aside from the algae cover and so much dead reef, the structure here is more interesting then what you'll see in most of the Western Caribbean. No walls to speak of but the u/w topography of the tongue & groove and patch reefs is impressive.

I saw the Akumal feature in the current edition of Undercurrent. Knowing the area, the diving and the shops there pretty well it really made me wonder about the credibility of that "magazine." I'm just waiting for the experienced and demanding bunch that plan their trips based on what Undercurrent says to go to Akumal and see what they have to say.

Dressel Divers is the dive shop at IberostarŽ´s hotel, they are ok, but as they have a very big operation of several all inclusive resort, the service is far from being personalized.
Do not know much about Akumal operators, but you are fairly close from Puerto Aventuras, where you find some dive shops with good reputation.

...I believe my family & I will be down Akumal way by early May. Has the pollution destroyed the snorkeling in the area as well? I thought we'd stay at the Bahia Pricipie - anybody have an opinion on that resort?

Thanks!

Do yourself a favor and skip the ocean dives around Akumal and dive the cenotes. You are at the best staging point to visit most of the popular ones. You have over 200 logged dives, so I assume your buoyancy skills are good. Tight conditions at times and many overhead situations. You can see the damage from unskilled divers in Dos Ojos.

The snorkeling has been effected but to a much lesser extend than the scuba reefs. I actually saw some sponges and soft corals in Half Moon Bay.
