some threads in the forum say that you can dive air using ean set to 21%. usually this is done, as far as i can tell, because the stinger (and other suuntos...) prevents you from going back to air after nitrox diving, until the no fly time expires.

is there something that i'm missing or should we just use the computer in nitrox mode all the time setting it to 21% when diving on air, and changing it to the appropriate mix when doing nitrox ?

why do they have an air mode altogether ?
is there any use for the air mode if we can have "air mode" in nitrox ?

Nope, that's it. Just leave it in 21%. My Vyper resets to 21% after a few hours automatically...I've never dived it in Air mode.

In air mode, one of the bars shows your nitrogen loading. In nitrox mode, it shows your oxygen loading....at least that's what I think happens.

All of this is in the manual, I believe...the vyper manual tells you to just leave it in nitrox mode if you are switching back and forth a lot.

I dont know about the stinger, but on the Mosquito the EAN 21 is different then AIR 21 in the sense that different information is displayed to the diver at depth. For example in the lower right PO2 is shown instea instead of dive time and on the lower left Fo2 is shown instead of water temp. (something like that, i'm not in the water right now )

i did a quick check on the stinger manual (i was reading it when i first posted) and they don't mention nitrogen loading in air mode.
in ean mode it shows OLF on the right side but, as far as i understand, the right side bars are of no use in air mode. it just displays ascent speed on the left side.

the stinger and the mosquito operate in almost the same way. i believe the information shown is the same and it is user programable.

with a stinger, in nitrox mode you have a choice of PO2, dive time and time on the right side and O2%, max depth and water temp on the left.

i checked the mosquito manual as well. you do have the same information available.

It is a safety measure for the vast majority of divers who are not trained on nitrox. Not knowing what PPO2, O2%, CNS etc are, you really don't want untrained people changing these settings or being confused by their display.

ok. good point.

i'm not trained in nitrox , YET! i do, however, like to read manuals and see what all the buttons and settings do. i tend to forget that some people don't.

Yea, the stinger doesn't have a 'loading' bar like [I assume] the vyper does. With the stinger [not sure about the mosquito] but you can hit the bottom buttons to switch the lower displays between temp, max depth and o2 percent [on the left] and dive time and o2 partial pressure [on the right].

One thing to always remember with the suunto computers [or the stinger at least] is to check your o2 percent before you get in the water. I've had it reset back to 21% before after a long surface interval. In my pre-dive checks I always go into the settings and make sure it's set to what I set it at.
