I'm heading to the area, from Texas, for business and diving. I've been to Catalina Is. once before but I'm sure there's lots of other good places. Any locals interested in diving with me would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Well, you're planning on coming at the best time!

The next few months are traditionally the best months for great vis. Of course, I say traditionally because it did not seem to work out that way last year. Let's just say that it was a very untraditional year. This September has started out quite nicely though.

I'm sure you'll have people to dive with as the date comes closer. I might be able to make it that weekend, but won't know until the middle of that week.

I got a flurry of responses early on but they stopped. I've inquired with a couple of dive clubs but no solid luck. I hope I get more concrete responses before I leave for So. Cal. on Thursday.

Big swell is expected this weekend. They call it the 20 year swell so I reckon that means big. The swell models do not agree so who knows?

But Malaga cove should be good for 10-20 feet of visility. Catalina should be good for 20-60 feet.

I'm planning on diving this Saturday with dazedone, but we're not sure where yet. It's dependent on the swell that's been predicted and where the red tide seems to be (or not be, for diving).

We'll probably wind up making up our minds by Friday and then may change our minds when actually standing at the shore seeing what it really looks like.

Anyone is welcome to join us, but the plans look sketchy at the moment. We definitely won't be going to Catalina, but may wind up at Malaga Cove/RAT Beach.

your best bet will be do schedule a boat dive to anacapa (www.calboatdiving.com) or to catalina, several boats go there. do you want to do a 1 day or 2 day boat trip? are you bringing gear?

the anacapa boats will put rental gear on the boat for you, and you can leave it there after the dive, its very convenient. they leave out of oxnard. (ventura county), a little far from the OC though. there are also boats out of san diego, but long beach to catalina would be a better bet, I'd try to get on the great escape or sundiver.

You wouldn't happen to have contact information for them would you?
