We're heading to Cozumel!

Since it's our first time, and we want to maximize the amount of diving we do, what is the typical and recommended max number of dives per day? In looking at the different dive ops, it looks like there's an AM 2-tank trip and a PM 2-tank trip. So can you do 4 dives a day? Or is it, AM 2-tank, plus a shore or night dive? So you are doing 3 dives a day.

Recommendations and suggestions are appreciated. We'll be there the first week of April!

4 boat dives a day is quite possible but you will have to keep a close eye on N2 loading as you would probably be doing more than anybody else on the boat. Also depends on the dive op. If you are diving with one of the more conservative ops like Dive Palancar, it shouldn't be much of an N2 loading problem, just a waste of money.

I often do 2 boat dives and 2 shore dive per day if I stay at Scuba Club. Or if I dive with Dive Paradise I usually do the 2-tank morning and 1-tank afternoon (shallow).

I've seen some folks who were doing 4 boat dive per day. They were fairly experienced, young, and worn out after a couple days of 4 dives per. If that is the plan, you really should go with nitrox.

I have done 5 boat dives a day. It really isn't much fun after about a day. To get four dives in comfortably, your best bet is two am dives followed by a 2 tank twilight/ night dive. The break keeps the day from being quite so brutal. Plus, remember it is a vacation. I typically mix it up and do some days with only two morning dives. and others with the 4 dive combo described above.

I have done 4 dives a day in Coz and yes you are worn out and I ain't no spring chick. Make sure the dive op gives you long SI times.
I also found that two 2 tank trips per day was too much when repeated every day.

A 4 dive combo that did work for me was 2 morning boat dives, a shallow shore dive after my post-lunch siesta, then a night dive either from shore or a boat. An advantage of this schedule is that your gear stays wet and you never have to rinse ;)

Ditto.............and no doubt you should be diving EANx. Your playing with fire if you dive that much anyway. Hope you have a good working knowledge of your computer.

Thanks for all the suggestions and recommendations! It really helps to see what others have done and recommend. And warnings too :)

Definitely want to do more than 2 dives per day, and we know from past experience that 4 dive per day is really our max if we want to consider it a vacation. Right now, hoping for 3 dives per day, and perhaps a 4 dive day (2 tank AM and 2 tank twilight/night) thrown in for variety. Just wanted to know if it's a possibility. Most of what I've read previously was centered around 2 dives per day.

Thanks again!

As long as you keep pretty careful watch on your computer, I don't see what the big deal is with 4 tanks/day. Most of the dives in Cozumel are fairly shallow. The idea of the morning/twilight dives is great. I almost always dive 3-4 tanks/day for most days when I'm there. It is fairly tiring, but so what? You can spend the rest of the time relaxing. You'll want to take extra care to stay hydrated, but you probably know that already. Have a great time!

I agree. Definitely go with nitrox. If you have a good nitrox dive computer (like Suunto), you can dial in the oxygen percentage and it will keep good track for you of the N2 loading and unloading. I also bring along my own oxygen analyzer as well.

Watching your depths and your surface intervals should make 4 dives per day quite feasible and safe. Hydration is going to be extremely important as well, and that means avoiding coffee and alcohol as much as possible, while drinking a lot of bottled water.
