Hello all,

I may be in Houston for work in early January, and I'm wondering if I should bring my dive gear along. What are the local dive options like and how hard is it to find a buddy, either for a shore or boat dive? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm a recreational diver with just over 60 dives and I"m pretty much open for anything as far as sites.

thanks,
Colin

your best bet is to talk to the folks in the "city of houston underwater mariners" or CHUM City of Houston Underwater Mariners - The Water's More Exciting with CHUM in it blue lagoon has the best visibility right now, but will be closed until the spring unless you book a group of 6+ otherwise, 288 lake is still open. unless you want to do a rig dive, i think these are your best bets. pm me if you set a date.

It looks like I'll be working next Monday through Thursday, so I'm hoping to find a dive on Friday (1/7) and possibly one on Sat morning. My first choice for the dive would be a rig dive since I've never done one and I like to try to get an ocean dive when I can. Any suggestions for a dive op who might be going out on a Friday, or is this the wrong time of year?
thanks again for any advice,
Colin

if you're willing to drive down to port aransas, the orion is one option. i don't know if they're operating this time of year, and they're nominally a fishing charter. "david" at scubaland is a sometimes-divemaster for them 512-891-6054 maybe someone else in the swampdiver forum can chime in here.

Thanks Rakpix,

Unfortunately, my work schedule just changed and I'm going to have to work both Fri and Sat, so I'll have to wait and hope for another trip down here to get to dive.
