Do you need an STA for singles on your rig?

Short answer, NO!

STA's do offer the advantage of quick change over from single tanks to double tanks. In practice however not many people find the need to make this change on the fly. Some might, it's possible, but in my experience not common.

You can use a STA with our goods if you choose, but it is in no way necessary

I'm not a fan of STA's. The primary fault I find is the fact they position the tank further from your back. This does nothing to improve valve access, and can tend to roll you over.

It is possible to design a BackPlate and wing that will provide a very secure, low profile mount for a single tank without a STA.

Great info.

What do you think of integrated ditchable weights vs. a belt?

I wear a weight belt ...

Yah, I noticed in your wing description that it has a "Built in elastomeric single tank stabilizer."

Thanks for the quick replies... that goes a long way for a buyer like me.

Hi ClevelandDiver,

Thanks for the kind words. I do have question. What about our gear makes it appropriate for single tanks only? I'm curious why you think so. We make doubles wings, and our plates are in every way compatible with doubles. My Al 80's, LP 85's and LP 120's bolt right up.

I ask the question because I'm concerned that our website may be failing to convey this point.

Tobin

Tobin,

I was refering to your single tank set up being superior to Dive Rite's rec wing single/double set up for someone who only dives singles.

Based on the information on your web site, I was under the impression that your doubles plate/wing is for doubles only. I will go back and reread it, but that is what I took away with quick review.

As to my recomendation for the rec wing, while I understand that the Dive Rite rec wing set up is a compromise that is not optimized for singles or doubles, some people may prefer the ability to switch between the singles and doubles using the same rig.

I am starting to come to the conclusion that a dedicated single tank set up might be a worth while addition to my ever growing arsenal. When I finally make the jump, DSS is likely the way I will go. It took diving the rec wing rig (wish is a HUGE improvement over my old jacket BCD) to really get a feel for what was important in a bp/wing for me.

BTW thanks for all the posts relating to your products. They really come across as informative and not just someone trying to sell their product as the best only way to go. I wish more manufacturers were as interactive with their customers and potential customers in this type of forum.

What is the advantage of an STA versus two cam bands. Does it add noticable tank stability or is it just for ease of switching between singles and doubles?

My main reason for switching to a STA was taking weight off my belt.

On the dive rite rec wing I have it also helped stabilize the tank. The cam bands do a pretty good job without it, but it did improve the stability. As Tobin mentioned, it does move the tank away from your back, for me it was about a half inch. I have not noticed any tendency to roll me around or create additional drag though. I frequently do barrel rolls to look for my buddy who likes to dive directly above me and I have never had any problems. I could see where it might be a problem though for a smaller diver (I weigh around 230lbs).

I can see that we might leave that impression. Really what we are atempting to do is offer "packages", one for singles, one for doubles. The plates the same throughout.

Sounds like we need to make the modular nature of the system more apparent.

Thanks for the feed back.
