Anyone have experience with either light? I'm looking to replace a dive light that is trash really like both of these lights from what I have read...all my diving is in the Caribbean some wrecks/ night diving can't decide between these two. Any help? Thank you

I’d upgrade you to an Orcatorch ZD710 MK2. This latest version of the zoomable 710 has a really nice beam pattern that can be zoomed from a fairly wide flood to a super tight spot that’s perfect for signaling buddies in low light. The adjustable beam makes it work great in many different situations

I have a Diverite CX3 and Orcatorch DC710 (and 510 GL).

The CX3 is slightly thicker, and has a slightly brighter and more focused beam than the DC710. The 710 lasts for around 80-90 minutes, which is the minimum you want a torch to last, and its still a bit disconcerting to have a red low-charge warning light in any dive over an hour (i.e. most dives). The CX apparently lasts for 3 hours - my longest dives with it are 2 hours.

For me the CX3 wins as dive rite torches are very robust (I abused a BX for over a decade), and most importantly it has external, waterproof charging. I find what kills torches in the long run is having to take the battery out to charge/expose a charging port: one day the O rings will fail to seal when reassembled: I have a drawer full of dead torches as testament to this.

The DC710 is a fine torch. My first DC710 died after a few dives (the button leaked) but Orcatorch replaced it as they have a one year warranty.

The ZD710 MK2 landphil mentions or 720 might be a better fit for you as they are quite flexible with variable beam and brightness. The larger light-head of these makes it a bit too bulky for me.

Cheers
Rohan.

Sorry - no banana for scale.

Ignoring how much better the physical Dive Rite light is, Orcatorch has long a history of sponsoring divers that have had severely negative or questionable impacts on the dive community. A chunk of their reviews are pay to play (DM me for a light and buy it from Amazon and I’ll reimburse you post a review and you can keep it).

Thanks yeah I'm definitely leaning towards the CX3 question for you if you put another 21700 battery that has the type C charging port on the battery will the magnetic charger charge that battery in the light?

Thanks but I'm looking for more compact I've narrowed it down to the two mentioned appreciate the reply though

In theory the 21700 batteries with the built-in usb charger can also be charged using an external charger, so I assume they can be recharged by the torches recharger: I would ask Diverite to confirm.

Personally I have no urge to open the battery compartment of my CX until the battery life starts depleting (after ~500+ recharge cycles).

Cheers
Rohan.

Thanks yeah I did get a reply from Dive Rite and they said it will charge in the flashlight I just want to have a spare just in case

My 2p for warm-water rec, since I had a similar decision to make. In the end I went for an Orcatorch D700 (instead of the CX2 at the time) and have doubled down also getting a video light D710V.

Pro Orcatorch: The D700 perfroms really well as a casual primary and has no buttons etc, so it's an easy carry with no fear of accidental battery drain. Also the size is far more compact than the CX2 and even the CX3 - especially in the diameter, which is strangely fat even on the CX3, the 21700 battery looks like it has dead empty space around it, whereas the Orcatorches are snug to the battery. This means when clipping off and securing to shoulder webbing with snoopy loop (i.e. BPW setup) they take up less space, snag less, and are more comfortable / close to the body.

Pro DR: It sounds from the above posts like the CX3 has a better (more efficient) LED and circuitry, and the handle mounting options might (maybe?) useful at some point. Although TBH as/when I start needing a properly powerful primary I'd probably go for a big boy FX40 (or similar). Also the CX3 might (?) be more robust, and the button operation and passthrough charging mean you're messing with the o-rings much much less than on the Orcatorches. If I were diving every week/end I might go for the DR.
