From Man dies free-diving off Albany coast
POLICE divers have the grim task of retrieving the body of a man from the bottom of the ocean after he died free-diving off the coast of Albany this morning.
The man was diving without SCUBA equipment with two mates just before 10am on Sunday 50m off Bald Head in 20m deep water when he failed to surface.
His body was found at the bottom of the ocean .
Police divers will retrieve his body this afternoon.
Senior Sergeant Peter McLean of Albany Police said a boat was now anchored over the man’s body ready to be brought up.
Snr Sgt McLean stressed the man, whose age has not yet been confirmed, had not been the victim of a shark attack and probably died from a lack of oxygen.
“We do have a male deceased off Bald Head…we know where he is exactly we just have to get the divers in there and bring him up, its nice clear water we know exactly where he is,” Snr Sgt McLean said.
“There is definitely no shark involved I can tell you that, maybe he went a bit deep and he ran out of air.
“With free diving you are not using tanks or anything like that.”
Snr Sgt McLean said police will be interviewing the man’s two friends to try and find out what exactly happened.
