Two men who died after separate dives on a wreck off the east Cornwall coast were named by the police today.

Both men dived on the wreck of the James Egan Lane in Whitsand Bay.

In the latest tragedy, 41-year-old Mark Jackson, from Southwell, Nottinghamshire, died after his dive on Wednesday.

He was was one of a party of four diving on the wreck.

Mr Jackson was recovered at the surface and transferred to Derriford Hospital by Royal Naval helicopter, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The earlier diving incident happened on May 21, also in the area of the James Egan Lane wreck.

The diver who went missing on that occasion, named today as 47-year-old Raymond Thomas, from Cardiff, was a member of a diving club visiting the area.

The Devon and Cornwall Police underwater search unit recovered his body from the sea at Whitsand Bay six days later.

Very odd for such a "safe" wreck. Given its max depth you can only assume it was rapid ascent and maybe embolism from that - its really too shallow to expect fast fatal bends.
