City man drowns while scuba diving at West Hawk Lake

A 52-year-old Winnipeg man drowned Sunday afternoon while scuba diving at West Hawk Lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park, RCMP say.
The man was diving with a companion at a popular dive site at about 1 p.m. when he apparently encountered difficulties and became disoriented.

When he submerged after briefly resurfacing other divers in the area joined in to rescue him. He was found several minutes later under the water.

Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The man's name is being withheld until his family are notified.

He was a friend and a student of mine, and he was out for the weekend enjoying the sport that captivated and motivated him. I will miss him.

Many of us are shocked and trying to deal with this. An autopsy is being performed to help determine the cause, after that information is released, details that will hopefully help others avoid this type of tragedy will be made available.
