*sigh* Not a good week for sharks in Perth :(

There is a lot of "kill all the sharks" hysteria going around, not being helped by the local media.

I am sadly waiting for confirmation on the diver's id, as there is a strong chance I know who it was.

Very sad. After a period with no attacks in Western Australia, two in the space of a couple of days, killing both people.

I'm also waiting on ID of the lady for the same reason Wetpup. We have had a massive salmon run and quite a few spectacular baitballs and we do have big sharks. If these estimates of 6m and 4.5m in Bens case are accurate I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Hoping it's not who I think it is, incredibly sad for both families and loved ones of both Ben and this lady.

always sad news in the diving community.....

It's not totally clear from the story, at least as I read it, but it appears as if the attack may have happened at depth. From my readings of the incidents over the decades, that would be very rare. Nearly all shark attacks on divers that I have ever seen occurred when the diver was at or very near the surface, with the assumption being that the victim was mistaken for another animal. What is consistent with those other stories is that in the attack, the shark does not appear to have returned after inflicting the fatal bite. When a shark is after a meal, it usually inflicts the bite, leaves to let it take effect, and then returns for the meal when the thrashing is over.
