I know that it is a really sad matter to write but I think we learn a lot from them...

Here is what happened last week in Greece according to the TV news...

A diver found dead after a couple of days of searching in about 50 meters (about 150 ft). Here is what happened according to some of his friends... He did 2 scuba dives that day and then we went for a freedive in which he disapeared... Later he was found in 50 meters.

From what I know freediving after scuba is dangerous and I think this is what the above incident shows...

Your opinions ?

Manogr

I doubt that "freediving after SCUBA" is a direct cause of the accident. However, it has been reported that freediving before SCUBA is risky insofar as it may result in fatigue, dehydration, cold, and repetitive(deco) dive concerns.

It may be that a freediver, especially a spearfisherman, who is swimming in 25 fathoms of clear sea, will sometimes dive deeper than his normal safe range. The sea attracts us, and it keeps what it gets.

Freediving after scuba is considered dangerous in terms of increasing the risk of DCS. This accident is not related to that concern at all.

Most freediving deaths are the result of blackout leading to drowning.

So what do you believe was the situation ?

It was a sad coincidence that he died during freediving after scuba or those are related ?

I am confused and I would like a reply from our :doctor:

I recall reading a good article on freediving in Dive Training. (Feb.02 issue I think) It cautioned free diving after scuba diving because of an increased risk of DCS. I too am interested in the opinions of the regulating MDs about this.

I doubt that the cause was of free diving after scuba. Most likely cause was shallow water blackout.

soundsmore like the culprit...From my very little knowledge...it does appear to be shallow water blackout. I have just finished reading "The Last Dive" and they described this a couple of times..........

I ordered Last Dive from Amazon and waiting to receive it...

I read many good things about it and can't wait to read the actual book...

So those that say that this is a case of shallow water blackout believe that this could happen even if he was not scuba diving before ?

is that correct ?

Manogr

Shallow water blackout can happen on any freedive.
