Scuba diver critical after near drowning

A scuba diver is in hospital in a critical condition after being pulled from the water at a remote beach.

Bystanders at Flint and Steel Beach at Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park north of Sydney performed CPR on the man and dialled triple-zero, triggering an extensive and complex emergency response across Saturday afternoon.

NSW Ambulance crews, the Westpac rescue helicopter, Rural Fire and Fire and Rescue and NSW Police crews raced to the scene just after 2pm, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told NewsWire.

The man, aged in his 40s, was put onto a Rural Fire Service boat and transported to a port, where an ambulance crew then took him by road to Northern Beaches Hospital in a critical condition.

He arrived at the hospital just before 5pm, the spokeswoman said.

A NSWFR spokesman told NewsWire six firefighters assisted, including a specialist rescue team.
