Most DMs who help with classes are in training to be instructors and that's just part of the deal. Generally no pay. The only DMs that get paid are those few who work boats. This applies in South Florida, don't know about elsewhere.

Can't DM's also do refresher classes and charge for this as long as they are insured and have an active DM status? Also they can do "Discover local diving" and be guides for dive sites and charge for this as well. When they do this they can arrange the charters, rental gear, etc, and often times boats will not charge the DM for his dives if they book 4 or more people on the boat. I don't know what the going rate is for thiss type of divemastery.

Generally, Food, possibly a beer, and the satisfaction that you have launched yet another diver off to discover the wonders of the undersea.

Oh, and the opportunity to return next week to do it all over again.

The LDS I work with pays DM's or DiveCon's (SSI) for teaching snorkling, refresher course and photography. Plus if you work the boat you go for free and I think they said you get $25.00 the boat ride's vary 45 to 85 depending on the wreck. Hope that helps, I did it to move on to Instructor.

My LDS pays me for confined and open water dives, and for snorkle lessons. Not much but it usually covers gas. I also get free fills, and a store discount.

But as TexasMike says

is the norm for most other LDS in my area (and don't tell my LDS, I'd probably do it for nothing)

I just discovered a LDS in my area that pays its DM's I didn't ask how much as I'm not a DM yet. I also have a problem with its a different agency.

Tom

that is done by many LDS's is discounts on gear. How much of a discount can depend on the shop and what you want to buy.

Thanks all, that is about what I figured.

On another note, what are the pluses/minuses of one organization or another? Does a DM have to be a DM in the particular organization he is teaching/assisting. I know they have the instructor cross overs, how much do these ($$) run in general if they are needed? It seems PADI would be the best in this sense overall, having more members, etc, is this true?

It looks like around here that DM classes are in the $450 range. It seems like a lot of bang for the buck if you have a good instructor.
