Does anyone have any opinions about divemaster internships? I am looking for a speedy, inexpensive (I'm working off a student's budget), but still very comprehensive way to go from OW (my current cert) to divemaster. Internship programs seem to be the answer I'm looking for. My fear is that there is more emphasis on the resort/shop upkeep than the hard skills. Maybe this apprehension is unwarrented. If they are worth it, does anyone know of any places that offer quality programs? I'm particularly interested in places where I can brush up on my conversational spanish while I work...but I'm open to anything.

Thanks!

See if you can find posts by Cancun Mark. He works as a divemaster or instructor in the Cancun/Cozumel area. Suggesting this based on your Spanish interest.

Not that often you see someone quote Heln Keller :-)

There are no real time constraints, I'm just really excited about it and I would like to get some exposure and work related experience under my belt. I think I may go ahead through Instructor as well and try to land a position working with kids in an Outward Bound type setting. Most of the guides and instructors there are in their upper twenties and low thirties so I know I have a few years to play around with. At the same time, I know that there are a number of other certifications that I will need to have in order to be considered (I'm looking at river guiding, ropes course, and WEMT), and each of those take time as well. All of this on a recent graduate's salary is going to be tricky--a few months playing the monetary game, a few months off learning and becoming certified, repeat. The real rush though is just my enthusiasm!

Too bad you aren't here in Maryland, our shop offers an DM internship program where you spend more time with classes then in the shop, although if you wanted to work in the shop as a paid employee, that option is there also. I would imagine that a lot of other shops offer the same type of program.

click through the info pack in my sig line Shae and then email me, it sounds like I have pretty much what you are looking for..

Shoot, this makes me want to go pro! Too bad I'm married, 2 kids in college and have an elderly parent. If I would have seen this 20 years ago I might have been Cancun Jeff!!!
