The Zoop is a good entry-level divecomputer but it has limitations. AFAIK it cannot be used in gauge mode and it has no backlight (which some see as an advantage and others as a drawback) The Subgear XP 10 has abacklit display but no gauge-mode, the Oceanic Veo 2.0 cost about the same and offers backlight, free-dive mode and gauge mode, you will not outgrow it, it can serve as a backup for your Petel once you get one ;)

Look at a number of dive computers at dive sites and let the users explain the functions they use, then make a list what options you want the computer to offer.

do they even make "air only" computers anymore? Back a few years, I remember them (had one), but I can't recall seeing one anymore...

I thought I was going to be clever and post some links to air computers. I couldn't find any, even on sites like leisurepro. There were several air computers being sold online in late 2012 when I was looking for my first computer.

+1 for the Mares Puck. It's $175, doesn't lock you out if you bend it (it just goes into bottom timer mode), can be used in bottom timer mode so it's a good backup if you start doing deco dives, rated to 400+ feet, user replaceable battery, nitrox and altitude capable running a bubble model if that's your thing (RGBM w/ tweaks), has a backlight, and did I mention it's $175?

The Petrel is an outstanding computer that has a recreational mode, so if you see yourself doing deco diving then it's a great choice and will be useful on any dive. It is above your $500 price tag though.

I dive a Petrel and a Puck, one on each arm. Works great.

I dive the Petrel, but it's probably too much computer for most people. Most divers don't need a 10 gas deco computer that can handle everything.

My wife dives with a Cressi Leonardo. Big numbers, easy to read and easy to set, well within your budget and if you're so inclined you can get it in pink ;)

Petrel here too, backed up by a Predator. I would get in the water without my Shearwaters. Great computers. You can usually pick up a used Petrel for ~$600.

I have the Scubapro Maridian. I mainly bought it for three reasons; 1. to complete the ScubaPro lift warranty 2. as a secondary computer 3. I love watches and it looks great (though I have never warn it out of water). These days its gets most of it use by my GF when we drive together or on solo dive that warrant added security.

My go to computer is the Icon HD with transmitter. large, colour, clear. tells me all the info I need and has never let me down. They call it the iPhone of dive computers and I agree. I like the rechargeable battery, so I know I am full at the beginning of the day (with an over night charge) and I don't have to wonder if the low battery indicator will go off half way through a trip (some need to be sent to dealer for replacement of non rechargeable batteries).
It handles nitrox well and thats all I need.

I also dive with a watch as well. Dive tables can't hurt to know.

Long story short both work, never let me down and the
Scubapro Maridian looks great doing the job if a wrist watch size computer is what you are after. I could easily live with just the Scubapro if I had to.

Let us know what you get and how you like it

With $500.00 to spend on ONE computer!!!!
More than enough to buy two if you shop carefully. There is nothing wrong to have a back up.
Sunnto Zoop, Mares Puck, Cressi Leonardo just to name a few.
