Humpback Whales of Salt Cay SCUBA Expedition.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCUBA dive Salt Cay and experience the magnificence of these huge mammals for yourself. Diving and Snorkeling with these huge whales during frequent "in-water encounters" is truly an awe inspiring experience. You can get an excellent view from the boat if you don't want to get in the water with them. Salt Cay is one of the last places in the world where you can actually swim with these magnificent creatures.
The diving is great!
Dive on the Endymeon Wreck, dive with Humpback whales, dive "The Wall", or snorkel from the shore and swim with sting rays. The Endymion is an unsalvaged 17th century warship in 25-35 feet of water. "The Wall", a 7000 foot trench, is only 100 yards from shore and are but two of many fantastic dive sites around the island. The Humpbacks are the main attraction. Salt Cay offers scuba divers and snorkelers an abundance of marine life in sparkling beautiful seas. Eight Nights 9 Days round trip air from Atlanta $1495
Salt Cay is considered the "Whale Headquarters" from January to March each year. The little cay is directly in front of Columbus Passage where the Atlantic humpbacks migrate to the Silver Banks, between the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Dominican Republic, to calve & mate. When scuba diving and snorkeling you can hear the mesmerizing sounds from the Humpbacks. The beautiful songs assist them with their navigational skills.
Mothers and calves are frequent visitors to the waters off Salt Cay.
THE MAGNIFICENT HUMPBACK WHALE....
Energetic, vigorous, bubbly and inquisitive these majestic rorquals of the sea pass by the shores off Salt Cay on their way to the breeding grounds. It is during the mating season that divers and snorkelers delight in the long and complex songs of the males as they presumably whale and sing mating songs to their better halves. Very social they regularly travel in groups of two or more and you can often see them with their calves.
Anyway at close range they are easily distinguished by their exceptionally long flippers, knobbly head and the white and black coloration on the underside of the fluke (tail). They have a much more rounded and dare I say it, voluptuous body then other whales with an area of white on its back or belly. And if you want to count the baleen plates found on each side of the upper jaw they total between 270 and 400. Caribbean whale watching -- just another way to spend the day on Salt Cay!
They grow to 50 feet of course and live to 70 plus if they first survive human disturbances, prey depletion, pollution, hunting, entanglement in nets and collisions with vessels. Thousands upon thousands were wiped out by commercial whalers but luckily since 1966 they are now under the protection of the Whaling Commission.
Declared an endangered species we must all do our best to respect our "brothers" of the sea. Salt Cay whale watchers are fascinated by their antics. The humpback whale loves to flipper slap, breach, lobtail and generally frolic sometimes close to a boat which they approach out of natural curiosity.
Join us this February 12 -20 for the trip of a lifetime. We fly into Provo and take another plane out to Salt Kay. Stay on the island, dive with the Whales, dive The Wall, and dive one of the top 10 rated wrecks in the world the Endymeon Wreck.
