Hi all - first post here at ScubaBoard, found ya'll from a suggestion over at FlyerTalk.

I'm heading off with my family to Brisbane and am thinking that my 11 year old might be ready for dive training. (I'm an ex-ex-DM but will re-cert with him.)

I understand the age issues, and I get that he (and probably I) need a physical, so what I'm looking for is a good dive shop in Brisbane. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm afraid a good dive shop in Brisbane would probrbaly tell you he's too young to dive.:no

Well, here in the US it varies between 11 and 13, though gosh knows I helped a bunch of 13 year olds who should have still been in the baby pool.

If I wasn't sure I would still be a strong safe diver I would probably not want to send him out with a random buddy, but....

What is the best dive shop in Brisbane, then?

down here the standard is age 13 BUT if you can get a medical certificate then a dive shop will put the child thru

our only niece was Jnr certified at 12yrs with no problems... she picked the skills up far better than most adults, she hauls her own gear around with no complaints (unlike alot of 40+yrs old students hubby has) and unlike me can take her mask off and dive without a problem

im not familiar with brissy im sorry but i can recomend DiveDiveDive (is it in brissy-im not sure) (http://www.divedivedive.com.au/) a more tech shop but the blackwell brothers have a good name in the industry (they are SSI & TDI)

another thing i just thought of... if youre in brisbane, about 1hrs north is Nth Stradbroke Island (you get there by ferry), they have a diveshop on the island so you can make a long weekend out of it also. about 1-2hrs south of brisbane is the Sunshine Coast SunReef & ScubaWorld (dive the HMAS Brisbane) and they might be able to help.

good luck and enjoy!
