Is it just me, or does PADI make the tables seem more complicated then they actually are?

DMing an OW water class right now. The 10yr old kid with learning disabilities seems to get it. I think he's not "smart enough" to overthink it. Figures out the one, eisiest way to plow through it. Just happens to be the right way.

I can neither confirm nor deny that some dive shops will purposely make the learning of Dive Tables difficult for new OW students... and then extol the virtues of Dive Computer... great way to make a sale...

I just took a NAUI Nitrox course last month. Along with the Nitrox they also introduced the new RGBM tables. This isn't NAUI only and is a very simplified way of determining dive time and MOD. 3 dives / day; asssumed SI of 1hr Min and very easy to read.

Well I use a computer, the dive shop did try to sell me a nice expensive one that I of course said no to. But my courses are not through the dive shop. What I was referring to is the videos and what not make it sound like the tables are difficult. I haven't read the entire book that came with the tables, but it's not anywhere close to as difficult as I was led to beleive. Our instructors haven't talked about them at all yet, aside from random mentions during a lecture.

No, it's not just you.

PADI wants the tables to be hard. VERY VERY HARD! The ability to subtract or divide simple numbers is paramount to the world domination goals of all PADI instructors.

Just sit back and allow us to do so.

I only had a glimpse of the PADI Tables now and again. I dive with a computer but still do my tables ahead of time just for the practice in case I forget my computer or it fails. I use the SSI table and I think it is very simple and easy to use. Plus the font size used in SSIsTables are much easier to read (I think).

I don't really like the tables. I use the wheel, much easier for me. Although I've got to start cutting tables for my heliotrox course in a couple weeks. That oughta be fun. I've been lacking mental stimulation.

I think the main idea is sales...I saw this above...

I have been around the world diving (maybe twice now) and have seen dive shops that make tables simple and dive shops that want to sell computers. I have seen ONE (1) shop that teaches tables clearly and easily...but still is selling lots of great equipment too. Ascubaventure in Corpus Christi.
