Roatan Scuba Diving Maps

The "Ocean Crest Resort" thing is just a demo thing

Some of the sites seem very close together. I have always wondered what makes an area qualify as it's own site? Distance an average diver can go during a single dive? Grooves that separate sections of reef? Structure of the reef? Types of flora and fauna?

This is not a real pressing question, just a conversation I thought would be interesting.

Plus, the map looks very nice.

There are many considerations. In the West End area they were initially set to be roughly a 50 minute dive apart going at a reasonably average speed.

However, there are also many sites whose mooring has been placed due to a specific feature nearby that divers either like to see, or make them useful as open water training sites.

That seems how South side moorings were set. I believe that they might be unique in the world as there is a different named dive site located on either side of the mooring. This. I assume, was done to allow the track of the dive to descend to the wall, go along the wall in a set direction, begin a slow ascent at 1/3, come back on top of the reef, find mooring in a predetermined depth, then poke around within sight of the boat until you're sucking fumes. (There is hardly any current on the South side, so this makes sense)

Harder to accomplish as a group exercise if you don't select one side or the other in the briefing.

I have been on some dives on Roatan over a hundred times and I still can't remember the names- altho once underwater I can recall almost every detail. :dork:

I saw one of these in the gift shop at AKR, but didn't really like the layout. Instead, I got the EcoArte map from the dive shop (a bit flimsy, but has Roatan, Utila, Guanaja, and Cayos Cochinos), and the Ignacio Gonzalez Roatan Dive Guide, which is great and very detailed for selected sites.

Of course, I'm sure you guys already know about these. :)

Well since we are all putting in a little self-promotion here is a link to our interactive Roatan Dive Map:

We also are updating it with Virtual Reality tours of the West End, Coxen Hole, French Harbor, Hole in the Wall Restaurant, Mangroves, the Airport and many more sites around Roatan.
