I may be going to KL in June and am hoping to be able to sneak in a couple of dives. what's the nearest good dive site to KL?

The better diving is on the west coast of the peninsula so Tioman or Redang might be your best bet.
They are both a short flight from KL, so you can make a weekend trip. Better if you can add on the Monday / Friday. http://berjaya-air.com/flightschedule.htm
You can get there by coach or car but it is a fair journey about 5 hours by coach.

Port Dickson is close to KL < 2 hours and some resorts do offer scuba . I know of no one who has dived here so you would need to research further to find out what it's like. see http://www.holidayasia.net/pdhtl.htm

Another option would be Pangkor on the west coast, I don't know anyone who has dived there but it looks Ok above the surface and they do offer scuba.

If it was me, I would take a long weekend and go to Tiomnan.

Second victor, but should point out that Tioman and Redang are on the east coast. I used to do long weekends in Tioman quite often. Here's how I used to do it.

Sneak out of work early on Friday; usually about 16:00. Drive south on the main road; you'll be heading toward Johor or Singapore. About 80km from Johor, there's a town called Air Hitam. Turn left. The toll from KL to Air Hitam is about MYR35.

Follow the signs to Kluang. Drive straight through and follow the signs to Mersing. The drive used to take me about three hours so just in time for a bit of tea. I used to crash at the Eastcoast Backpackers. Spartan, but clean.

The ferries usually leave around 07:00 in the morning - depends on the tide. Search this forum for suggestions on dive centres.

You can do it by coach, but I've found the times inconvenient. I'd go so far to suggest that you fly onto the island and the bus back to KL. Take the Monday or even the Tuesday off.

jigo, check this website: http://www.nadi.com.my/transportation_routes_express2.asp they have some very clear details about time & fare rates.
you may also check other destinations in this website. dive destinations from KL are quite far, you might want to add another extra day for your diving pleasure. Tioman should be your best bet if you've got limited time.

try www.nadi.com.my then just look it up from transportation section, then journey, then inter-city express

you should be going from KL to Mersing. then from Mersing, take the speedboat to Tioman (1½-2hours). Choose to go to Salang, it's closer to the dive sites. Ask for AJ from Fishermen, he was our DM.

thanks penn. 6 hours by land plys 2 hours by boat?! may not leave me with any time to dive. thanks!

You may take the night bus trip, you'll be in Mersing just in time for the first boat trip to Tioman.

What we did was stay at a friend's condo in Johor Bahru for the night, then took the early morning drive (2hrs) to Mersing, then 1½ speedboat to Tioman.
From JB, it's like going to Batangas then to PG.

If you're going to bus it, then take the overnight from KL Pudaraya. It will get you to Mersing in time for the ferry.

Return - take the 18:00 from Mersing. Get you back to KL ready for a day's slog at the salt mines on Monday. If you can, take Monday off and relaaaax.
