I posted this under my state but didn't get many responses. Thought I try again in a little more broad sub-forum
Back in my day I had a couple old fashioned paper books that listed all the popular sites to dive in a state. Basic specs about the place, location, description, etc.

No doubt these are all online now. What are the go to places for researching dive sites?...especially for florida?

The site isn't the most active, but check out the scuba-earth feature.

Ned DeLoach - Diving guide to underwater Florida.

Not updated for a while, but it hardly matters. 800 sites will keep you busy.

is this one legit?
I don't want to register not knowing.... for some reason I have a weird feeling
but it's what comes up when I search google

I signed up using a disposable email address and while it seems legit, it doesn't seem to have much content (at least for Australia/Japan). The fact that it has pretty aggressive disposable email prevention tech rings red flags for me - why would a dive site website care? A site which is trying to harvest user data is far more likely to want to ensure email addresses are valid and linked to identifiable humans. Nor did I find a simple map which you can scroll around to discover dive sites. divebuddy.com seems to be a bit better.

I'd like to find a good community-contributed global dive site map, similar to Open Street Map but specifically for dive sites, to contribute to. I can't believe there doesn't seem to be one which has managed to stand out yet. Don't really fancy wasting time and effort contributing to one which will either end up commercial as soon as it has enough content, die off, or is just focused on a single region.

Why not Open Street Map itself? They already have a basic set of tags to define dive sites:

Around 300 sites have been entered already

Here's a (more thorough than usual) example:

Because that is not aimed at or for scuba diving and finding/managing scuba spots through OSM is not straightforward nor results in a nice map/list with easy-to-see relevant details of all the dive spots in an area. Other things which would be nice to see in a dive-spot oriented system are fauna/flora seen at the spot, recent dives, finding buddies, shops to dive those spots, etc, Some of these features would be very difficult if not impossible to shoehorn into OSM.
