I have a obsession with traveling to check out dive shops and 98% of the time I never buy anything I just like to go see what the places have. Though in my travels i ahve found a few things that make some of these shops great. Many of them realize they can no longer compete with internet pricing so their gear is as low as possible some times a few bucks different from the internet, their staff is extreemly freindly, they make their money from trips, from training (boost the cost a little higher to make up for lost in cost of gear sales), many offer free air fills or discounts for return customers. Those are just some things I noticed. I would suggest if you jump into this that you have a good marketing person, some one that can come up with crazy profitable ideas that keep people comming back.

Try diveshopsforsale.com

List mostly Florida shops and all price ranges. Good site with info about owning a shop. Talked with the guy last year, real nice.
I too have been looking into this for a retirement business. Word of caution, most dive shop owners work long hours and income will change with the seasons.

Good Luck
