i'm curious if anyonw dives the dive rite rec wing with a single tank without the gusset control system cord installed. dive rite suggests using it when diving singles with this wing. do you think it will make much difference, or should I order one or diy one?

They don't like them in Fundies, but personally, I wouldn't want to use the RecWing for singles without the cords in.

But that's because the RecWing is barely tolerable for singles with the cord. Without it would be even more absurd... completely taco'd around the tank. Bad news.

If at all possible, use a singles wing for singles and a doubles wing for doubles. The RecWing is somewhat decent, though not great, for small doubles. But it's barely useable for singles. Best to get the right tool for the job... the RecWing, as an attempt at a compromise, does a passable job at both, but barely. And it's a PITA switching configurations.

How does it being taco'd make it bad news? By DIR standards or is there some kind of significant risk?

Well, I can always make one myself, as the used one I purchased comes without. No biggie.

By all standards. It will wrap around your tank and flap around creating unnecessary drag, plus it will trap air making it very hard to vent properly. If it is all over the place at one time or wrapped around the tank, how will you exactly chase air to the highest point to vent?

Please do a search here on SB, you should be able to find a photo of a huge wing wrapping the tank and more arguments why to avoid such scenarios.

Sure, you can use it and it would work (how is a completely different topic), but personally I'm a fan of 'smallest possible wing applicable' philosophy.

cool. I can make one out of some shock cord when I get it. My Knighthawk has cords similar to this, and they seem to work as advertised. Maybe I can just set up some doubles and just dive the Knighthawk when I want to dive singles.

Went diving singles with a DiveRite RecWing without the gusset cords before I got rid of it. The air trapping makes dumping air from the wing very uneffective.

I dive singles with Halcyon Eclipse and Explorer for doubles. If you would like to go with DiveRite, the Venture wing is probably the choice.

If you aren't decided about DiveRite yet, do a bit of reseach on this board, there are other good BP/W system out there such as DSS, Oxycheq, and etc.

Pretty sure that all of the Rec Wings come with gussets, not an option. I used one in Cozumel one winter. Once I had it sinched down tight it worked ok. The Venture or Travel work better. The problem for me was the air bubble wandering around. Shifting from shoulder to shoulder or top to bottom. ( always to the high spot ) I won't bash it because of the gussets, but the right wing for the right job and there was no time I needed 50lb's of lift.

Well, the Rec Wing is on it's way, so I'll have to rig something myself and see how things pan out. Thanks all for the input.
