Following on from a number of posts here on Scubaboard concerning specious and spurious suggestions from varying LDS's I thought it would be good to have a thread where we can accumalated the various pieces of "wisdom". Some starters for 10 from this thread

beester:
Hi guys... I recently bought myself a 2nd regulator set. Since I dive cold water I chose the Scubapro MK17 / G250V setup.

I asked to interchange the regulator hose with a longhose (5 feet). The shopowner told me that this is not a good idea. Because the volume of the longhose is larger then a normal hose the 1st stage has more difficulty getting the intermediate pressure up again after a breath. According to him this would be noticable in my breathing and would therefore relegate my high end regulator to sub par.

mattboy:
Here's one to add; a tech at a LDS once told me that the IP should be lower on a MK2 than on other SP 1st stages because "that little reg can't handle the high IP"

I had a very interesting conversation with my LDS this evening in SLC Utah about Leisure Pro. I told him I was thinking of buying some scuba equipment from Leisure Pro, and I must say, I was not expecting the reaction I received. To say the least, it was very negative toward LP. During all his ranting and raving, he said one thing that caught my attention and I wanted to glean from the infinite knowledge that can be found on these forums. He said "LP makes fake stuff" and they get it from the "grey market"

Care to share any profit-motive or patently preposterous propaganda from your LDS?

That is just preposterous coming from a shop that cant even manage an air fill half the time.
And when they actually have banked gas they fill a tank in (literally) 10 seconds. I cringe when I hear the lines singing.

Kind of sad when a shop has one potential advantage over the internet and they manage to screw that up.

This kind of stuff might make for a humorous compilation of "crazy things heard at the LDS" as long as it's made in good fun, but I see no purpose if the objective is generalized LDS bashing. One could make such a list of preposterous statements from online retailers or instructors or any other segment of this (or any other) industry.

Not bash the LDS? It ain't gonna happen. I will admit to hearing more than my fair share of stupid statements from LDS's, I work part time at one, so I get to hear a lot. Unfortunately, so many of the bashes are warranted against a few lds's but I have also called some online retailers with customers present and gotten some wild claims and outright bull crap. The worst part is if you get a line of crap from one LDS, we all get branded. We can't meet online prices, we're money grubbing tightwads.

But in the spirit of the thread, I did have one shop tell a customer. No regulator is safe with EANx unless it is my brand and my staff has cleaned it.

Speaking of Dive World, Austin; I stopped there last week on the way to Travis to see about having my last Mk20 recall applied. I expected it might be a problem as I have both a yoke and DIN connector that needed to be changed on it. I explained what I wanted and the service person who identified himself as the shop tech asked which connector I wanted installed. It seemed too easy to be true so I tried to verify that he would apply the recall on both the Yoke and the DIN connectors. He pointed to the saddle and said that the only thing they changed is that black thing. I asked if they did not change the yoke and DIN retainers also. He explained that the new saddle prevented the connectors from being overtorqued and that was all he changes. I took my regulator back and left.

The point of the thread IS a humorous compilation. It happens to have started with a thread about comments from a LDS about long hose effects on regulator second stage performance. But, this is a liberal thread - so feel free to include preposterous statements from on-line retailers as well. Generally, communication with online retailers is more limited in scope and volume than those held in a LDS. But, maybe we can adjust the title of the thread, along the lines of Art Linkletter - 'Dive Retailers Say the Darndest Things.'

'Dive Retailers Say the [-]Darndest[/-] Dumbest Things.'

There, I fixed it for you.

A shop local to me charges $2 extra per fill for an Al80 ($7 vs $5) for oxygen clean air.
Kinda pathetic, when I could go elsewhere and get an Al80 fill of 32% for $6.
