I am just curious as to if there are any dive resort managers on the board? I am attending school for hotel management, and I want to focus on becoming a Dive Resort General Manager, as I am sure they will almost have the same description as a hotel manager? please chime in! I would love to network with some others in the same area of expertise. :D

Here are some suggestions.
(1) Do your Management Course
(2) Dive a lot all over the world in different environments
(3) Become a DM or Instructor and interact with customers in dive resort
(4) Get information about dive retail business
(5) Oversee day to day operation and dive expeditions
(6) Manage logistics for a busy operation
(7) Gain knowledge of dive equipment servicing
(8) Gain Knowledge about dive boat, operation, maintenance, operating cost etc
(9) Gain knowledge about local permits, regulations, taxes etc
(10) Gain knowledge of marketing dive package, dive tourism etc.
or
Do a Dive resort Managers course at Mermaids Pattaya, Thailand
Bottom line , if you don't enjoy diving as much as your customers you won't be successfull as Dive Resort Manager.
This just my stupid opinion.

Andy gave you some great advice. There really are no shortcuts to doing it right. :)

Get a job as a maintance man at an apartment complex.....
If you get off in the 3rd world you will have to know how to fix just about everything in the place.... You will usually have people working for you who will do the actual hands on stuff... but you are going to have to know how to do it so you can explain it in extreme detail or it's not going to get done.....................

A very Handy person with a little managment back ground will beat you out of a job quick.................

Oh and about diving - you might get to go once a week if you are very lucky - Cause you aren't going to have time...
Also alot of dive experience isn't going to get you much - Dive Masters are a "nickle" a dozen..............

That's just my opion I could be wrong

This is ALL great advice guys. I really appreciate it... Its not so much that I want to be diving ALL the time. I'm sure there are resort dive masters/instructors as well that take care of that. I want to be a lodging manager, but with dive experience (obviously i will need it). I worked for my grandfathers complexes as a maintenence man for a long time so I guess that prerequisite is taken care of. lol. I would just SO MUCH rather work with an intimate resort rather than just a "name" hotel. I want to dive, eat, and personally KNOW guests, so they keep coming back. Like a place you go to spend a week with "friends" you know what I mean. I definately have the passion for diving and the passion for the hospitality management aspect. Thanks for all the positive advice! Thats why I love this board..
