Got out today for a 3 tank dive to Santa Cruz island. Dive one was on the Peacock or Spirit of America- multiple names: Peacock
The minesweeper has been down for 45+ years and is covered in and encrusted with life. Sits in 65 feet at the sand. Strawberry anemones galore. Lots of fish (Huge Sheephead, Lingcod, Rockfish)-- A full on Spanish Shawl convention was happening- they were everywhere. A really pretty dive site in a marine protected area on the front side of Santa Cruz island. After enjoying 40-60 foot visibility in blue water last weekend, I felt transported back to the PNW and the Hood Canal this weekend. 10-15 feet of viz, tons of particulate/algae bloom and green water. It is that time of the year. Stayed on the front side for dives 2 and 3 at Cavern Point and Snail Rock. Both are outstanding dive sites in MPA's and as a result, lots of big fish abound. Saw a school of 40-50 barracuda at Cavern Point, massive lobster that know you can't take them and are happy to come out and say hello.. Kelp is extremely healthy and abundant around Anacapa and Santa Cruz.
