Dive Report on Sea Saba

Now that I'm back to work I've had some time to reflect on my trip with my family to Saba. I wanted to thank you and your team again for making our trip one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences for myself and my family (Christine, Sarah, and Matthew). I wanted to say a few additional words of appreciation to you and Vickey for taking the time and interest in the safety and motivation of my daughter Sarah. She was able to muster the will to get back out and have several exiting and memorable afternoon dives. I would also like to reach out to Fred and thank him too for his time and attention in helping us getting our SeaLife camera setup and his advise once we screwed up the strobe. Believe it or not, per Fred's recommendation I returned the damaged (trashed) strobe head to SeaLife and amazingly they replaced it at no cost. I really expect that, but Fred said that SeaLife was working at improving they're reputation and it was worth a try. Thanks Fred! I also want extend my gratitude to your team for their patience and toleration. I had arrived with some new equipment. A Galileo Sol dive computer along with a Sherwood regulator. In typical tourist form, I'd not spent anytime getting familiar with either prior to showing up on the island. Once of your team apparently also has the same computer and was able to get me started on using it (I hadn't even paired it to the air sending unit on the first stage). The regulator was fresh out of the box and Saba was the first waters it hit and what an impression it made. It would spend most of the dive squealing (at least your guides always know where I was).

I got back from Saba a month a go. I liked it a lot. I've been diving all over the Caribbean & would rank Saba in the top 5. I stayed at Juliana's & dove with Sea Saba. Both were excellent operations. Sea Saba even sets up your dinner reservations.
The visibility was around 70-75 feet. I saw some the largest turtles I've ever seen (saw turtles on every dive). Also some sharks (nurse & Caribbean Reef). I saw stingrays & 3 baby squid. I saw a large barracuda & some big tarpon. Coral reef is in great shape. We speared a few lion fish (a nurse shark munched one right off the spear). I used Nitrox all week which was probably a good idea w/ the change in elevation (below sea level & then back up to Winwardside at 2,000 feet). Some divers were wearing wetsuits; I just wore a thin exposure suit & never got cold.

This is one of the least commercial islands I've been to. It's clean & safe. It is incredibly steep (no need for roller coasters just take a taxi ride). Although it's a Dutch island, everyone speaks English & they only use American money.
If you like to dive & hike, this is the place for you. It's rugged beauty everywhere.

I would definitely eat at Swinging Doors (a few minutes walk if you're staying at Juliana's). Best ribs I've ever had (Tuesdays & Fridays) & great steaks on Sundays. Brigadoon was very good as well (shrimp Michael). I also ate dinner at the Sheerwater Resort (amazing view from their pool deck but downright scary driveway - like driving up a long ladder). There are wild goats & roosters all over the island.

I took a tour of the island one day for $25 from one of the taxi drivers. It was interesting and informative 2 hour trip.

I will definitely go back.
