Well,
Gary and I went dive today at La Jolla shores. It was our first dive together as dive buddies. I got off owrk at 8am (yes, 8am after starting work at 8pm the following day) and met up with Gary at 9:30 at the shores. We took a look at the conditions and decided to give it a go.
We got into the water and boy did it feel good! After 3 months out of the watewr and this being my first dive out of class, it was refreshing. As I was kicking out on my back, I felt so relaxed. Working 80 hours a week and going to school full time, this was the peace and quiet I needed. We lined ourself up with the palm trees and the beige house on the hill and dropped down. We heaeded to the north wall and vix was about 10-15 feet. I was also using my computer ffor the first time A Suunto Cobra...I love it). We saw a few things, some giant sheep head, some kelp bass, gobys ect. I also found a nudebranch which I have been looking for. A purple one, soo full of color!
Well, we hit 1500 psi and Gary gave the signal to turn around. I turned around and my buddy was gone! I looked all around and he was nowhereto be found. So, I stuck to our seperation plan and started my ascent to surface. My Cobra said I should do a three minute saftey stop at 15 feet. I swear this was the longest 3 minutes of my life. I surfaced to find Gary waiting. He got caught in some surge or something and was pushed to the surface when we turned around. He had tried dumping air, but he couldnt stop his ascent to the surface. He said it was like losing a weight pouch. Well, we regrouped and headed back down and headed for the shore.
As we got into shallow water, about 15 feet, I was having a hell of a time staying down. I thought I had air trapped in my bc so I tried to use my back dump. Eventually I gave up and surfaced in about 10 feet of water and followed Gary along the top. As we were de-gearing, I found the reason why I was having soo much trouble. I had lost a weight pouch. The ruined the second dive.
So, if anyone finds a Oceanic Chute II weight pouch at La Jolla shores, let me know. While I love my bc, the weight system is a little crappy. I was thinking about sewing a velcrow strap over where the weight pouch sits. Something that is strong, but easy enough to pull the pouch out. Good idea bad idea? The worst part is I am leaving to go to San Carlos Mexico on friday to go scuba diving.... booo!
