Relatively calm day. We dove at 1400, approximately an hour after high tide. First time diving King's beach. It turns out that diving from the beach out to the reef is terrible because of the 200 yards of eel grass you need to go through. Next time we will definitely dive from the rocks at the first parking place. Vis was pretty good in the 10-15 foot range. Saw a bunch of big tautog (I can see why people spearfish here) and some good tropicals too. The rich colors of the tropicals are a sight for worn new england diver's eyes. Fish ID question. We saw some big flat, almost butterfly looking silver fish hanging around with us. Any ideas?

Maybe Scups Medic and they look like large silver dollars.

Glad you enjoyed it. Did you get around the island ?

I dove King's Beach on Saturday night (08/18) near low tide and the viz was only 1-3'! I was rather disappointed though we did see some nice sized flounders and a few skates. Within the next month, and hopefully as the viz improves, one can usually see many different tropicals swimming through the eel grass. Last fall one might have thought that they were in Florida with so many tropicals out and about!

Looking at some pictures I think they were scup. I guess I've just never seen scup, underwater at least lol.
