After a seemingly long a busy winter we got the gang back together and headed out to the Wreck of the Heroine on Saturday. We were also joined by a new friend, Mike, that we were introduced to during the winter.
We targeted the Heroine as the weather forcast had me believing that we would be experiencing stiff NW winds, thus we decided to stay tight to shore. However, when the day dawned we were greeted with flat and calm conditions. A perfect day for Cetacea's maiden dive of the year.

The Heroine is a large partialy intact fishing vessel (formerly a sailing ship) which lies in about 80fsw. Under poor vis it is easy to become disoriented and miss parts of the wreck as there are stretches of sand between sections of wreckage. On this dive it would not be a problem as the bottom came into focus when I was at just about 50fsw. I could see sand and shells over 25 feet down! We were tied into the wreckage on her port side by the boiler. The boiler and the bow offer the two highest points of wreckage with large areas of disarticulated and twisted beams and steel plates strewn between them and aft of the boiler. The Blackfish were on the small side and skittish but Jan and Mike managed to grab a few for dinner. This wreck receives a good deal of attention by local fishermen as the large number of sinkers and monofilament lines offers testament of such. We timed our dive at slack water and experience slight to no curent. I have been on this wreck at other times when I had to duck into the lee of wreckage to keep from being swept off the site.

Under the ideal conditions that we had Saturday, the Heroine provided us with a very nice and relaxing dive. It was great to have the gang back together and also dive with a new friend.

Sounds awesome! Almost makes me wish I owned a boat, but then I remember how much time and money it takes to keep one running so instead I just wish I had more dive buddies that owned boats! :D

it was indeed a great day to be on the water. I was on the Seeker trip with jimjam (one of my regular buddies) and a host of others, diving the 853. Teriffic day, calm seas and pretty darn good vis. Kohler and Chatterton being on the boat as well, only made the trip that much better!

I am glad you got out Dennis. We are just finishing up work to get Adventurer back in the water (I can't wait to see how much diesel fuel is going to be this year). On Sunday we recommisioned my mooring so I made a quick run to the Ft Getty Barge in the Avon. Vis was not bad.

John,

Good to hear that you got in the water also! Re:fuel, just got to get the crew to dig deeper for the fuel fundeyebrow.

Regards,
Dennis

They all understand that. Luckily this boat is alot more efficient than my old Wellcraft.
