During training as recipients of the Dive Pirates Foundation, stories of shrapnel, surgeries, and more filled the air, but soon dispersed as they located fins, BC’s and completed their open water certifications as “classified” divers (SSI’s revamped Adaptive Diving Program designation) to prepare for their trip to Cayman Brac.
“This is a great group this year, men and women who have been though a lot, and we are so fortunate to get to know them,  do something fun, and turn them into rock stars for a week,” said foundation president Barbara Thompson.
This year’s recipients include:

  • Specialist Shane Bliss, US Army Houston, TX
  • Lance Corporal Daniel Burney, USMC Boerne, TX
  • Jimmy Cruz, Lubbock, TX
  • CW4 Jerry Hamilton, US Army, Clarksville, TN
  • Captain Marlene Krpata, US Army, San Diego, CA
  • CaptainAndrew Richard, US Army , San Antonio, TX
  • Corporal Travis Sigmon, US Army, Eden, NC
  • And Rio, not pictured, California.
These recipients received their training materials from Scuba Schools International (SSI), and have been trained as Classified Open Water Divers, along with Classified buddies who are trained  to safely dive and assist their buddy fulfill all aspects of open water diving.
Eighty people in all are taking part in this year’s annual trip, including 8 other classified divers who have been on the trip before and are returning to enjoy the weeklong adventure that includes three dives a day with Reef Divers II, beautiful accommodations at the Brac Reef Beach Resort plus scavenger hunts and other pirate pillaging.
The Dive Pirates Foundation gives special thanks to its sponsors; SSI, Brac Reef Beach Resort, Reef Divers II, renowned artist Rogest, Scuba DoRag, Pelican Case and JAWS Products for their dedication to Classified divers.
