We would like to dive this summer in Florida, looking for recommendations for a location and dive shop. We primarily dive on vacation in the Caribbean in the winter, and we would like to do some diving in the summer to keep in practice while exploring some reef without having to travel outside the U.S. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.

I had a great time in Key Largo; good way to get a lot of dives done in a short time, economically, and you can fly to Ft. Lauderdale then drive to Key Largo if so inclined, for example. Mainly shallow reef diving, with the option for deep wreck trips if you've got your AOW.

Diving Key Largo with Rainbow Reef Dive Center.

Thing is, we need to know about how many dives you've done, and where. You might be a candidate for diving the Jupiter area, but it's hard to say without knowing where you are in the hobby.

How important are non-diving options? If you're married to the idea of a big long sandy beach, Key Largo is not the place.

Richard.

Florida is a huge bloody place... diving from the panhandle to Key West. Wanna narrow things down a little. Depths, wrecks, reefs, salt, fresh, surface interval options... Where are you from? How many dives have you done? Help us out here!

Thanks for the quick replies. We are from Michigan, less than 10 dives total. We are mostly looking to have some additional dives without getting too rusty in between. Our primary interest is reefs, anything in that realm is interesting. Coming from Michigan, I don't think there is too much difference between the panhandle and the keys as far as travel, so we are primarily interested in getting a good, safe, competent dive outfit in an interesting reef area that isn't too expensive.

Here's a thread on distinctive Caribbean & Fl dive destinations that gets into some of your options.

I think Key Largo is your place. Be aware there's a lot of variation in Florida; east vs. west coast, and for example Jupiter vs. the Keys. And that's not even considering the freshwater options like the Florida springs.

Richard.
