I got a chance to try out a Raider I and was very happy with it. I'm thinking of using my budget to buy two of these for the time being and buying a better primary and relagating these two to back up lights when I have the funds. Does this sound like a solid plan?

Yes. Nice lights, I use a couple of them as backups and they're bright enough to work as primaries for most recreational dives.

On a $100 budget, I'd be looking here, Lights | Scuba Lights at LeisurePro.com, at the Ikelite PC LED for a primary and a PC-A Halogen for a backup for recreational diving with reasonable visibility.
