Ben, that sounds like a very neat solution! If I didn't like reed switches so much, I'd probably have done that.

I did make a sort-of-inertia switch before, but it was to move a magnet toward a reed. Got all screwy once I tried using the light for signalling :D
 
I'd prefer making a latching circuit myself because then I can change the torch to use whatever lightsource (upgrading the leds and battery) in the future without having to hassle with the hard-to-figure-out circuit board...

You can get a Taskled latching hall effect sensor for this. I have started using these in my lights and they work great. Best $11 ever spent.
