Just wondering what most divers out there use to tow around their dive flag.
My buddy and I just have a 100' rope attached to ours and it is a real pain in the a$$.
is their anything out their other than a dive reel that we could use? something that ratchets would be really nice. any suggestions are appreciated.

Large kite string holder thingy-ma-bob(definately a scientific term), just don't use kite-string :)

Some states require it to be anchored and not towed. I just use rope and a quick snap if attached to bc and it is a pain as you mentioned fooling with it.

I use a spool, just like you'd use to shoot a surface marker. Works great, and keeps the skillz intact.

Never, under any circumstances should you clip the thing off to yourself.

I personally try to avoid flag towing whenever possible, and usually just find a rock to tie it off to.

I use one of these:

They are relatively inexpensive as reels go and are well suited to towing a dive flag. It has a ratchet with a thumb release so it is easy to let out more line as you descend and to keep some tension on the line during the dive. They also make a 150 ft version but the larger one is easier/faster to reel in, allows the use of larger line and also reduces the risk of running the line off the edge of the spool as you can afford to use it with the reel less than full.

I went to a flea market a saw a "deep sea fishing reel". Most parts are stainless steel and some are chrome plated. I put 70 feet of cord on it and attached the short handle of a graphite shaft golf club, (where the rod would attach)

What I like about it is, I can set it to no tension (free release) or full tension (no release) and anything in between ( slight drag ). I can just let the whole thing go, in case of an emergency. It has a ratchet type rewind with a large grip.

Up here, one fella tied a dive float line to his BC and a young lad on a seadoo grabbed the flag and dragged him for a ride. Tied to a BC is not a good idea.

I can send you a PIC of it, if you like.
