Reflective tape strips and rolls can be purchased in the automotive section at walmart and will stick suprisingly well to the noodle material. We use small strips on our noodles that we use for fishing. They light up very well with just a small light from a long distance away.

Obviously more of a chore to tow, but I made a nice dive float/flag previously for someone before I started diving.

I used a laundry basket (the plastic ones with holes all over them) with floaty noodles around the rim of it (2 layers high) with a 2 pound weight in each corner of the float for stability.

The flag was not telescoping, but on a shaft that slipped into a PVC pipe mounted to the side of the float.

Much more cumbersome to tow (although drag really wasn't too bad), but you could store things in the float if needed.

NadMat,

Just one quesiton, where did you attach your tow line, to the bottom or closer to the waterline??

The tow line is attached at bottom of unit, beneath the weights. Although it tows OK, it is more for setting in place near entry/exit area on local lake dives than as a tow behind. Local laws do not require divers to tow flag with them or even to fly a flag. We generally just carry an SMB to deploy if surfacing away from marked entry exit area. I'll try to remember to post some pics of current completed configuration.
