As you've heard, each diver has a different tolerance to cold. I've been in Crystal River this time of year. I usually dive a 5mm full suit or a 2 piece 3mm farmer john and jacket, which gives me 6mm on my torso and 3mm on my arms and legs.

You want your wetsuit to fit somewhat snug (but not tight) above the surface because it will loosen up in the water.

Good luck, have fun and welcome to diving!!

i will be doing my o/w dives at crystal river can anyone tell me what mm sute i will need

You'll probably need 5mm (abou 1/4" for those who don't speak metric) or a drysuit.

For those who said a skin or 3mm... stop trolling!

I went snorkeling in Crystal River last week, I was comfortable in a 5mm full wetsuit with 5mm booties, but cold when I got out of the water. It's still pretty chilly out.

I hope, as a new diver, you are not planning on diving Kingspring Cavern. The visibility is null, and dark. I was perfectly happy staying at the surface (and playing with the manatees). Have a safe dive!

Hubby and I are in CR at least once a month. I wear my 3/4/5 wetsuit and am usually nice and toasty (and I am the one that refuses to dive if the water is under 75 degrees...Brrrrr).

It's a great place to do the check-out dives! Have a great time!

This is Great!
I know I'm from a different climate than most of you but when my family room gets to 72deg its time to turn down the heat and when the water reaches that temp I gladly dive it in a 3mil.
Of course to dive today I would have to cut a hole in the ice.

Dude, I learned to dive in Ontario. If I was still living there I'd be giving the same advice I am now. ;)

Just a matter of perspective I guess.
When the water temp here finally reaches 20c (68f) the air temp is around 25c (77f) to 30c (86f). That means that even if I get a little cool on the dive it is a beautiful summer day above the water and a 3ml is what I dive. In late summer, early fall I even go to a shortie but only for shallower dives.
