None of these computers have a compass. You will still need to get a compass. A compass will run you $30+

Do you have any your own gear? Are you going to rent gear? If you are renting you could check and see if they had a computer to rent. They might have a console that has the computer/compass/SPG for rent.

I would go to the store and see what they had. They should have a reasonably priced compass. If not, you could google scuba diving compass, there are several. There are house mounts, retractable on a slate and wrist mount. I use a SK-7 on a retractor but most like a wrist mount.

i will be renting most of my equipment. I normally only do carry ons so not enough and don't dive enough to warrant my gear.

It might be worth contacting the place you are renting your gear and see if they will rent you what you need, computer/compass /spg console. It might be worth it to wait and buy what you want at a later date.

Thanks. That's actually great advice. Will contact dive friends and find out.

The Dive Friends price list says $13 per day to rent a dive computer; I don't know what they offer.

some sanity check observations and questions:
- you really do not need a compass in Bonaire!
- a computer may make you less safer? (less conservative)

A compass is a great tool, but not one you will need in Bonaire for entry level dives. viz is high, navigation is easy as all sites feature a gently sloping wall. you swim along the slope, turn around, ascend a bunch and come back. so i would not panic if you can not locate a compass.

you will also likely find that you perform multi level dives. hence diving by square profile tables will be very conservative. more conservative than any computer.

you need a computer in bonaire if you want more bottom time. before computers we used simple square profile tables and were always "near the edge" after 3 dives in a day. we bought computers and instantly doubled our bottom time diving the same types of profiles. and we were no where near the computer NDL. so a computer does not necessarily make you safer. it may accomplish the opposite.

p.s. computers with ascent indicators are a good thing to help slow you down on ascents.
