Is a dive compass, that floats around in liquid, a TSA-prohibited item? My dive compass is part of my reg console (computer, analog SPG, compass). I've always carried on my reg unit in the past. TSA provides no guidance on their website, except "no liquids".

Anyone have any recent experiences with this?

I flew to Florida a month ago, and checked all scuba gear. I didn't want anything holding me up at the airport, and I'm darn sure not gonna leave my computer with TSA.

Just tuck it in with some soft clothes, and you will be fine. I had a hard shell suitcase, which I'd advise as well.

I wondered the same thing. I flew several weeks ago, just a week or 2 after the liquid ban. I took mine out on the way down but did not think about them on the way back. I had 2 regs go through a Fla airport with no problems with the compasses in the console. Like so many other TSA rules, who knows. Get an agent with an attitude and all bets are off. Mine are easy to pop out and in, so for a while I am going to remove and check them.

you gotta love TSA.....

1.) Before going through airport security, throw away any liquids such as drinks.
2.) Right after airport security is a stand where they sell drinks, for $4 more.
3.) In line to get on plane, throw away that half drunk $4 drink.
4.) On plane, they serve you a drink or sell you a alcoholic drink.

That will be my solution. Unless they have something on their site telling you it is allowed, presume it is not.

It should come out of the console, just take it out and check it.

At 75,000+ miles this year, this summarizes my experience with the TSA in a nutshell.

All the best, James

We called the airport this week and had that discussion with them and they said take it off and check it or they will take it. Tom

I flew a few days after they started the no liquid rule. I had my compass (attached to my dive computer) in my carryon they didn't even have me open up the bag. I probably just got lucky.
